Camping at RIAT provides an exhilarating experience that many enthusiasts cherish. One of the key benefits is being close to the action, which enhances your overall enjoyment. However, it's essential to weigh some drawbacks, like limited amenities and weather. Despite these challenges, I personally prefer camping here over staying in a hotel, as it creates unforgettable memories.

Camping is great, however its not for everyone so, below are the advantages and disadvantages.
01
Affordability
Camping at RIAT can be more of an affordable option for many, due to the night rates being far cheaper then a hotel. for example, a hotel can be from £150 per night, compared to camping which starts from £15 per night. However, you will need to factor in a few things first. If you are only staying for one or two nights then a hotel might be a better option as everything is provided for you, compared to a camping trip where you need a tent, cooker, utensils, sleeping bags, beds etc, Its all adds up. If you already have the equipment for camping then perfect. its more affordable, compared to someone who is only just starting out. I was actually in the position to camp for a few nights as I already had the basic camping equipment, however I needed to invest into more equipment. I have made a page dedicated on how to create a successful trip. Click on the Red box below for my ultimate in-depth guide to camping.
02
the weather
Camping at RIAT can be quite an adventure, especially when the weather plays a significant role in your experience. Over the years, I've encountered everything from scorching 43-degree heat to heavy rain that turned the field into a muddy challenge. It's essential to be prepared for anything Mother Nature throws your way, as each brings its own unique weather surprises. Embrace the unpredictability and make the most of your camping experience!
03
where to camp?
When choosing a campsite, consider factors like location, travel convenience, and the size of your pitch. For stunning views, Townsend Farm, Totterdown, and Kempsford are excellent choices, all within walking distance to the show. The beauty of nature while being close to the action. All three are perfect for photographers too.

05
Photography
Photography for most is why we go to RIAT, This extraordinary event, can offer the best out of photographers, so staying at campsites can offer you images you would not capture in the showground its-self. With health and safety being at the forefront, the days of standing at the end of Runway 27 for the day are now unfortunately in the past. So your best bet is to camp at the sites around RAF Fairford.
06
Food and Drink
Over the years when I have been camping, our group have tried many way of taking food, buying food and cooking food.

There are serval options I can suggest;

Firstly, as a group we find it easier to buy most of our food and drink from a supermarket near by, We use the "Big Tesco" in Cirencester. This saves taking up unnecessary space up in the car. Other supermarkets are available.
Secondly, To keep the cost down, why not bring condiments, This can save at least £15-£20 on sauces, salt, pepper etc.

If you are looking to venture out of the campsite on show days, please be aware that, In the Area of RAF Fairford, there are a fair few options to choose from. Our top tip we must share with you, please be aware that heavy traffic and one-way systems may make it inconvenient to drive from the campsite to nearby shops, restaurants, and pubs on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Fairford Village offers two small convenience stores, along with several pubs and restaurants, which are about a 20-minute walk from Totterdown 40 minutes from Flyby or Townsend. Unfortunately, it is not within practical walking distance of Kempsford. On arrival and departure days, driving times between these locations are typically under five minutes, but navigating the local area can be challenging during peak weekend traffic.

BBQs are a really popular item to cook dinner on. This can lead to a cheap way of cooking great tasting food without leaving the campsite. Its even better when sharing with a group.
