Camping is great, however its not for everyone so, below are the advantages and disadvantages.
Affordability
Camping at RIAT can be more of an affordable option for many, due to the night rates being far cheaper then a hotel. for example, a hotel can be from £150+ per night, compared to camping which starts from £15 per night. However, you will need to factor in a few things first. If you are only staying for one or two nights then a hotel might be a better option as everything is provided for you, compared to a camping trip where you need a tent, cooker, utensils, sleeping bags, beds etc, Its all adds up. If you already have the equipment for camping then perfect. its more affordable, compared to someone who is only just starting out. I was actually in the position to camp for a few nights as I already had the basic camping equipment, however I needed to invest into more equipment. I have made a page dedicated on how to create a successful trip. Click on the box below for my ultimate in-depth guide to camping.
Camping at RIAT can be quite an adventure, especially when the weather plays a significant role in your experience. Food and Drink
Over the years, our group has tried many different ways of handling food while camping, from bringing everything with us to buying it locally or cooking on-site. Here are a few tried and-tested options to make your RIAT camping experience easier and more enjoyable:
Shopping for Supplies
We’ve found it most convenient to buy most of our food and drink after arriving in the area. The “Big Tesco” in Cirencester is our go-to supermarket, it’s well-stocked and saves valuable space in the car on the journey to Fairford. Of course, other supermarkets are available nearby if you prefer.
Saving Money
A great way to cut costs is to bring your own condiments, things like sauces, salt, pepper, and oil. These essentials add up quickly if you buy them on arrival, so packing them from home can easily save you £15–£20.
Eating Out and Local Options
If you plan to eat out during the show days, there are several options in and around RAF Fairford. However, please keep in mind that traffic and one-way systems can make travelling from the campsites to local shops, pubs, and restaurants quite difficult on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Fairford Village has two small convenience stores, plus a few pubs and restaurants. It’s about a 20-minute walk from Totterdown Farm, or around 40 minutes from Flyby or Townsend campsites. Unfortunately, it’s not within practical walking distance from Kempsford.
Driving times between these locations are usually under five minutes on arrival and departure days, however, during the show weekend, expect delays and limited access due to traffic management.
Cooking at the Campsite
BBQs are one of the most popular and cost-effective ways to cook while camping at RIAT. They’re perfect for easy, great-tasting meals and even better when shared with friends or fellow campers. Just make sure to check your campsite’s BBQ safety rules and bring enough fuel for the weekend.
